Both track and field teams at St. Ben’s and St. John’s have found great success as the season has progressed and look to continue that throughout the rest of the year into the MIAC Championships and beyond.
“Our goal each season is to have our athletes perform their best at the end of the season. For some athletes, that means setting their personal best in their last meet. For others it is qualifying for the conference championship or the national championship,” SJU head coach Jeremy Karger-Gatzow said. Like many other spring sports, track and field has dealt with inclement weather that prolonged many opportunities to practice outdoors. (Read More)

CSB softball team soars in Florida, earns No. 14 spot in Coaches Poll
The CSB softball team has earned themselves the No. 14 spot in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association DIII Top 25 Coaches Poll (March 21) for the second consecutive week following a hot 9-1 record to start the season in Florida.
A lot went well for the Bennies down south. They outscored their opponents a whopping 57 runs to 19 and didn’t allow an opposing runner to score in five out of the 10 games played. At the time, the unranked Bennies bested then-ranked No. 21 Rochester and No. 6 Belhaven to help fuel seven straight wins to end the trip. According to head coach Rachel Click, the team has more depth this year than other teams in the past, with multiple players stepping up and filling important roles on the field. (Read More)

Johnnies prepare for Hockey Day Minnesota
The St. John’s Hockey team sits at a record of 10-7-2 (6-3-1 MIAC) through their first 19 games of the season and currently rank second in the MIAC.
“We have a really good team,” senior forward and captain Auggie Moore said. “We have really good goaltending; our depth is probably our biggest strength. We can roll four lines, probably better than any other team we play, and it wears teams down as games go on.”
The team’s depth and speed on the ice are evident in home games, where the Johnnies have won five out of seven games so far this year at Herb Brooks National Center in St. Cloud. (Read More)

Young earns his second consecutive NCAA at-large bid
The SJU cross country team placed seventh out of 28 teams on Nov. 12 at the NCAA North Regional in Northfield. However, this was not enough for the team to advance to the NCAA Championships.
“In total, if we did not match our excellent conference meet effort, we were close,” head coach Tim Miles said.
Senior Lloyd Young finished first for the Johnnies and tenth out of the 209 runners with a time of 24:53. Young worked his way up the field throughout the race, moving from 58th place at the mile to 22nd at 5.1K before finishing 10th. Junior Tommy Allen finished 49th out of 209 runners (24:53), and closely behind was fifth-year senior Dillon Diekmann, who crossed the finish line five seconds later, placing 52nd. Finishing three seconds after Diekmann was junior Carter Grove placing 55th. Sophomore Eamon Cavanaugh finished 63rd (26:03), while seniors Mitch Grand and Alexei Hensel finished 97th (26:40) and 105th (26:55), respectively. (Read More)

SJU advances to the MIAC championship
The No. 5 ranked Johnnies earned their place in the MIAC Championship game on Saturday against Bethel with a decisive 45-16 home win last weekend against Carleton.
“We went into the game wanting to get a fast start, and I thought that we were able to do that,” head coach Gary Fasching said. “Once our offense got rolling, we were able to move the ball on the ground and in the air. We had some big plays that were made that really sparked us.”
One of those big plays came from senior tight end Alex Larson. In the third quarter, Larson reached back for a one-handed 13-yard touchdown grab. Larson finished with 125 yards on a career-high 10 receptions while grabbing three touchdowns, setting the program record for tight ends with 20 career touchdowns. (Read More)
